What is Kung Fu?
The words kung fu means hard work. It is a colloquial term to describe the Chinese martial arts, rooted in more than 4,500 years of traditions with early influences by three main institutions: the military, religion, and the family. Kung fu exercises may be classified as internal or external and Northern or Southern style. The many aspects of kung fu include body and mind strengthening, self-defense, hand forms, weapons, philosophy, and herbal medicine. The total number of different kung fu styles is estimated to be over 300.
Curriculum
All students will be trained through a basic program consisting of exercises, drills and beginner forms. Within weeks, students feel a definite improvement in their health, strength, and flexibility. Students will be taught at the rate of their own abilities, and in this respect, a high standard of Kung Fu is achieved. As the students progress, they will be taught more advanced hand forms, weapons and self defence techniques.
Ranking and Certification
There are no ranking belts in Kung Fu, however, there are levels of test. Tests involve demonstrating the ability to execute techniques and expressing orally and in written form, the understanding of Wah Lum Kung Fu. A promotional certificate is issued after a student has passed both a written and physical test.
What is Tai Chi?
Tai Chi (Chuan) is a slow moving exercise for the individuals who wish to practice a less strenuous exercise program. Tai Chi improves balance, tones the body and promotes longevity. “Chi,” or internal strength, is acquired after practicing Tai Chi properly for an extended period. It is an exercise program for overall health and is known to cure certain ailments and illnesses such as high blood pressure, nervous tension, rheumatism and digestive disorders. Tai Chi is also ideal for regaining strength especially after a sickness or lack of energy.
Self Defense
An obvious benefit of martial arts training is the ability to defend oneself from physical aggression. Many practical and effective self defense techniques are taught to improve reflexive skills.
